What I Want You to Know:
I fight against HIV/AIDS by being informed and in every other way that I possibly can; such as volunteering with reputable organizations like LIFEBEAT.
Why I think it's important to challenge HIV/AIDS stereotypes:
In the 80s it was reported that AIDS was transported from Haiti by a man who was bitten by a monkey. There was such a backlash towards Haitians after this story was released and the majority of the population actually believed it. Education is key and the numbers do not lie.
How HIV/AIDS has affected my life:
My uncle passed away from AIDS in the early 80s. It was a difficult time because there was no known authority on the subject and unfortunately, individuals who contracted the virus, like my uncle, were isolated and sent to homes in the Northeast region for treatment and more truthfully preparation for death.
Have I ever been tested for HIV?
Yes, I have been tested. As I am sexually active, it has become a normal part of the routine.
