What I Want You to Know:
A friend of mine was the first person I knew to be infected, and when he told me, that stuck with me. He was the beginning of my involvement, and sets a great example in how he lives.

My Occupation:
I am a full-time student who is applying to graduate programs. I am also a full-time AmeriCorps/Caring Counts member placed at the non-profit Step-Up Inc. working in the area of HIV prevention.

Why I think it's important to challenge HIV/AIDS stereotypes:
HIV infection still carries such a hugely unwarranted stigma. It really can happen to anyone, so everyone needs to really know that, and internalize it by seeing people they can associate with who are also infected.

Why I get tested:
I have been tested many times, generally because it is the responsible thing to do for anyone who is sexually active, and yes, even people who are using condoms should be getting tested. I have also gone to get tested with my previous partner. We thought that would help build trust, and is a good habit to develop with someone before having sex with them.
